Military member importing U.K. car back to the U.S.?

U.S Car

I currently own a spec “R” plate 1997 Nissam Primera GT. Exact same car as the 1999-2002 Infiniti G20 sold in the States (just a minor grill facia difference). As a I am heading to the States and would love to take this with me.
Question is, since it is the same body style as the Infiniti (and therefore has passed DOT crash testing) would it be possible to register and ship back in the ?
If not, I believe there are ways to get a car shipped back as “non-road” going vehicles (i.e. for off-road racing use?)
Any advice is appreciated.

American and European safety and emissions standards are different. That’s why you don’t see many French, and some Italian built cars in the states. It would have to meet U.S. standards, and making a non U.S car compliant can get very expensive. Unless you get orgasmic over this car you may want to leave it in the U.K. where it feels at home.

“Thank You” for your service to the country.

What are the car import export laws and the selling requirements?

    Hi

If there is an FMVSS sticker on the vehicle then it will be easier – if not (likely), you need to have modifications carried out to make the vehicle compliant, these must be done by a RI (Registered Importer)

Under the contract, the RI will modify the vehicle and certify that it conforms to all applicable FMVSS. Before an RI can modify a vehicle, NHTSA must have determined that the vehicle is eligible for importation based on its capability of being modified to conform to all applicable FMVSS. If no determination has been made, the RI must petition NHTSA to determine whether the vehicle is eligible for importation. If the petitioned vehicle is not similar to one sold in the U.S., this process can become very complex and costly. A list of vehicles that have been determined eligible for importation can be found on NHTSA’s web site at http://www.nhtsa.gov/cars/rules/import.

We can assist you with shipping the vehicle if you decide to go ahead

Many have and still do…American cars (especially classics) are much prized here in the UK. However there are import duties and UK registration issues to consider and they make the value/price along with shipping fairly similar to the value in the US. This isn’t a ‘money making’ opportunity.

To bring a car over here, you have to have it UK registered, as you can only bring a non-UK car over here temporary for 2 weeks, before it will have to be exported.

So you’d import it, have it checked blablabla, and UK registered (conversion of number plates, or licence plates as you’d know them)

the price of petrol or as you call it gasoline in the uk will make you say “HOW MUCH ” American gas guzzlers are not big sellers in the UK plus it is left hand drive
