Importing a car from Canada to U.S.?

U.S Car

I’m planning to purchase a Rx8 R3 sometime this year or next. I’ve done all my research and this is the car I defintely want. Problem is that I would really want the white R3 that’s offered in but not in the , and I’m California.
I would probably go out there to visit some friends and on the way back purchase the car in cash and drive it back to the states. ( After the ferry ride)

- What are the regulation a car would have to go through to get it registered in the U.S. if bought from Canada?
- What other steps are involved? I know it’s a pretty long and fustrating process.
- Price difference is pretty huge when comparing Canada price to U.S. price. 41k>31k. Is it really that much?
- If it’s too much trouble I’ll just purchase a new black R3 here for 25k.

Anything else I will need to know would be very helpful.
Thank you.

Cars in Canada cost more because they require French language Owner’s Manuals. The FOM costs an additional several thousand dollars, plus the French language labelling on the car itself. Canadian cars may not pass the California smog tests unless labelled for California, and the dealer warranty may not be valid outside of Canada.

You may have problems the car from Canada. You can’t just drive it across the border as there will be fees and requirements that must be met. Also I’m not sure that a Canadian vehicle would meet the California Emission requirements. You should be able to buy a new white R3 in the US.

Only the US can tell you what’s needed to bring a car in from Canada. And yes, we pay that much extra for cars here in Canada. Many people buy cars in the US because even with all the hassle and expense of bringing a US bought car to Canada, they still save money. Buy the black car and have it painted.

    Buy the US R3.

Because really the one sold in Canada is the US model. Since BC started using California emission standards, all the cars sold in Canada and the USA have the same emissions package. However some models made outside North America may not have the same safety equipment.

The only difference is that the Canadian models have Daytime Running lights and metric dash board instruments.
